In response to the #BlackLivesMatter movement and to celebrate Black History Month, our ‘Spread Your Wings’ programme of events aims to highlight and celebrate the artistic excellence of the African Diaspora, in addition to creating and developing channels of communications for ongoing support, networking & opportunities for Black dance artists.

BHM Friday Online Classes
Join Movema & friends every Friday, 12.30-1.15pm, over on YouTube LIVE for our BHM special edition of Online class! We’ve invited international dance artists to share a diverse range of movement and techniques, to get you moving, having fun and celebrating black dance. Friday 16th Oct: Caribbean Dance Masterclass with A’Keitha Carey
This masterclass will provide dancers opportunity to explore A’Keitha’s CaribFunk dance technique, a fusion of Afro-Caribbean and ballet principles rooted in Africanist and Euro-American expressions. Followed by a discussion on her PHD research: Exploring Erotic Subjectivity and the Erotic Performance by Women in Jamaican Dancehall.

Friday 23rd October: The Conversation
Following our Friday Online class with Akeim Toussaint Buck (see above!), join a facilitated conversation by two Black dance specialists, LIVE on Zoom 1.30-3.30pm. Together with panel of dance artists, educators, scholars and programmers, this important conversation will provide opportunity for black dance artists in the North West to share and discuss barriers and challenges within the dance sector. Delivered in collaboration with Black People in Dance (UK).
