Partnership with SGREN

Over the last three months, Movema and SGREN (South Gloucestershire Race Equality Network) have been working together on a pilot programme to provide dance workshops to local primary schools in South Gloucestershire.

The objective of the programme is to promote awareness of diverse cultures, connect families from different backgrounds within the local community and build children’ confidence.

For the pilot programme, Movema created a programme of activity to engage the children based on a Carnival theme. The 6 week programme combined dance with arts, crafts and costume making and culminated in a dance performance at “Celebrate With Me” an event to celebrate Bristol Refugee Festival.

The feedback from the teachers and children who took part in the project was positive, with 90% of  participants saying their confidence had increased as a result of the classes:

I feel more confident because everyone was clapping us when we were on stage.

Participant Feedback

This project compliments the work that SGREN are doing in local primary schools. The Travelling Library of the World project which is currently visiting each main library within South Gloucestershire for 3-4 weeks at a time, showcases stories from around the world including Africa, India, the West Indies, Eastern Europe, Asia plus many more.
