Spread Your Wings

A programme of free conversations, masterclasses & classes which provide a platform for Black dance artists to be celebrated, listened to and supported.

In response to the #BlackLivesMatter movement and to celebrate Black History Month, our ‘Spread Your Wings’ programme of events aims to highlight and celebrate the artistic excellence of the African Diaspora, in addition to creating and developing channels of communications for ongoing support, networking & opportunities for Black dance artists.

The Conversation

Together with panel of dance artists, educators, scholars and programmers, Movema hosted an important conversation providing an opportunity for black dance artists in the North West to share and discuss barriers and challenges within the dance sector. Delivered in collaboration with Black People in Dance (UK).

Workshops

Movema hosted weekly online workshops during October featuring artists of African and Caribbean heritage including ‘My Dance, My Joy’ with Akeim Toussaint Buck and ‘Urban Dance Fitness’ with Sabrina Steele, and a special Caribbean Dance and CaribFunk masterclass with A’keitha Carey (USA).

Support

Supported by COol Collective & Culture Liverpool, our Black History Month programme forms as a part of a larger collective of specially curated art commissions across Liverpool. Find more information on the city’s BHM celebrations here!
