Movema run a wide programme of dance activities for people of all backgrounds from different communities.  We aim to celebrate similarities and differences and provide engaging dance that strengthens communities and promotes understanding and cohesion.

Some of our key community work includes;

World Dance

With key events in our annual calendar, Movema’s community and professional dancers are always busy developing new performances.
We run weekly classes focusing on different styles throughout the year including Bollywood dance, African Fusion, Chinese dance, Irish Ceili, Latin styles and Carnival.  Events in Liverpool and Bristol include; Africa Oyé, Brouhaha Carnival, Brazilica, Harbour Festival, Black History Month, Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day, Light Night and the River Festival.

During 2015-2016 we also hosted a series of Masterclasses from leading international dancers supported by Arts Council England and LIPA.

YOGA Yes I Can

At the heart of our work is movement for wellbeing and personal development.  Movema are pleased to offer Yoga for people affected by ill mental health as well as a chance to chat and meet socially. The sessions currently run on a Monday.

Unlock the Box

Supported by BBC Children In Need and now in it’s second year, this project focuses on providing fun, up-skilling activities for disadvantaged children and young people across Liverpool.

LIVE Brazil

In association with BrazUKa and Liverpool PCT.  This project of Brazilian dance and drumming is aimed at engaging with and providing new learning opportunities for young people from less advantaged backgrounds in UK and Brazil.  As part of the project the group has made links with similar groups in Brazil and there has also been an arts exchange visit to Rio de Janeiro to share skills and learn more about each others culture.

Root and Wings

A project devised and lead by local young people including workshops, performances, events and professional training in African, Latin and World dance styles. Supported by Youth in Action and British Council.

FIT in the City

In association with Liverpool City Council and Us Girls. A programme of world dance and fitness activities for communities affected by inactivity and obesity.

Dancing Around the City

In association with Liverpool City Council.  Movema created a mobile dance hub that popped up around 5 Liverpool parks during the summer, providing a variety of world dance workshops with local and international dance experts. Aimed at communities and individuals who may not usually have access to this type of activity due to social, economical and geographical barriers.
